Dental Sedation, North York Dentist

Reduce Dental Anxiety

Dental sedation refers to a variety of techniques and medications used to make patients more comfortable during dental procedures.

At Sheppard West Dental, we do everything we can to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental appointments. In addition to offering nitrous oxide, we will work at your pace, take breaks when you need them, and provide calm reassurance as needed.

If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, speak to our North York dentists. They can help determine whether you are a good candidate for dental sedation.

Dental Anxiety

Do you feel anxious or fearful about visiting the dentist? If so you're not alone. Some patients experience significant nervousness about dental procedures, others need complex dental treatments or suffer from a severe gag reflex that makes having dental work difficult. For these patients, our dentists may recommend dental sedation.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, is inhaled through the mouth and nose. This medication calms patients even though they remain awake and able to communicate. Nitrous oxide also tends to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex and make time pass more quickly.

Is sedation dentistry right for me?

If any of the following apply to you, please ask your dentist about dental sedation at Sheppard West Dental:

  • Fear of needles or pain
  • High anxiety about dental treatment
  • Sensitivity to touch, smells, sights and sounds
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Very sensitive teeth
  • TMJ issues - difficulty opening mouth
  • Difficulty getting numb with a local anesthetic
